About The Author

Allan Kashmer  Personal biography Work history. Until my retirement in 2011, I was the Manager at Surry Hills Police Station for ten years. In that position, I was responsible for the administration of the Local Area Command. I also gained a good understanding of the operation of the NSW Police Force and regularly visited Police Stations in Sydney. This is highly relevant for the novel I have written, Red Norfolk, which demonstrates good knowledge of the layout of Police Stations in Sydney and the operation of NSW Police. Positions I have held prior to the position of Manager in the NSW Police Force included working for the former Ethnic Affairs Commission. A key project I initiated in that organisation was the inaugural Multicultural Market Awards, in 1993, which have been held every year since then, and are normally attended by the Premier of NSW. Prior to that, I was a teacher for the NSW Department of Education where I taught English and History, which I had studied at the University of New England. When I was at University, I wrote satirical articles for the university student newspaper. Relevant life details. I have lived in a number of countries including: France, Poland and the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). My native language is English, but I am fluent in German and French and am reasonably fluent in Polish. My father was born in a part of Germany (Silesia) which is now part of Poland. I have many relatives now living in Poland. I am married with two children in their twenties. My daughter is currently living in Ireland and my son is a Civil Engineer. After my retirement from the Police in 2011, I have been teaching English as a Second Language to immigrants, where I can impart my love of the English language. Why I like to write. Writing has been an important part of my work since I joined the NSW Public Service in 1985. Particularly when I was involved in policy work, I was required to prepare submissions to gain Government approval for initiatives I proposed. One example was to gain Government funding to double the number of Group Training Companies in NSW. These companies were not-for-profit companies which trained apprentices.
