Short Summary

One day in February 1905, eight-year-old Kenneth Beasley, the son of a North Carolina state senator, disappeared into the woods behind the rural schoolhouse he attended. After a fruitless search, neighbors suspected he was kidnapped by a political rival of his father's.

After 18 months of rumors, the suspect was charged with kidnapping. He was convicted in a sensational trial, involving many of NC's biggest political names. He then committed suicide, claiming innocence to the end. The boy was never found. But in conclusion, the book sets forth why he likely did it.
