Anna, a US Treasury official working in financial crimes, comes to Venice on vacation. She's dragged into the police station, suspected of murdering a powerful Venetian, known to her as a money-launderer, and with whom she had a brief affair. Terrified, she lies to police about knowing him.

With analytical talents, Anna identifies the killer: the money-launderer's accountant. The current murder echoes one almost 40 years ago. Attacked by the murderer mumbling about memories, Anna, raised by grandparents, realizes she had witnessed the old murder, and finds her father.
