Short Summary

Sydney's mom insists she take a summer class at the community center in order to broaden her horizons and work on her self-esteem. No class equals no cell phone. Sydney wants nothing to do with it, but is dying for a phone, so with Maggie's help, they plan the ultimate summer switcharoo.

Sydney and Maggie must partake in the end-of-summer performance show­cas­e attended by parents. Sydney and Maggie hatch a plan to combine their classes for a group performance in order to hide their true identities. Will their cover be blown?

Development Pitch

Sydney A. Frankel, soon to be sixth grader's, summer plans are flipped upside when her mom insists she sign up for a summer class in anything but the one she wants--reading. Her bestie Maggie is forced to take a reading improvement class, instead of her beloved dance. So the girls devise a plan to switch identities. Sydney's summer kicks into high gear with new and old friends to juggle, a fear of public speaking to conquer, a new sibling on the way, and a secret double life to keep on track. Sydney's life is about to get a lot more complicated than she bargained for!

About The Author

Danielle Joseph is the author of the newly released middle-grade novel Sydney A. Frankel’s Summer Mix-Up and the 2021 CBC Notable Social Studies picture book; I Want to Ride the Tap Tap. She also has written three young adult novels Shrinking Violet, Indigo Blues, and Pure Red. Shrinking Violet was adapted into the 2012 Disney Channel movie, Radio Rebel starring Debby Ryan. Danielle has a BFA in Creative Writing and an MA in Marketing Communications and Advertising, both from Emerson College. She's a former middle school creative writing teacher and has been teaching writing workshops for over fifteen years. Danielle was born in Cape Town, South Africa and currently lives in Maryland.
