    Development Pitch

Velvet Rain is a unique and extraordinary story that delivers an epic spin to time-travel thrillers. Born with the Turn—the godlike power to turn back time—Kain Richards can indeed turn back the clock, creating a new timeline within a limited sphere of influence. A short Turn of 15 or 20 seconds reverses time within a radius of only a few hundred feet, and only time inside this “bubble” reverses; time beyond continues as it was. This leads to unexpected and often devastating consequences, and if Kain Turns far longer, the bubble expands much farther, affecting more people, upping the potential for disaster. And while most don’t realize that time has reversed, a very small few experience déjà vu, with vague memories of the previous timeline—people with the Sense. And it is those very souls who pose a real threat to discovering Kain’s secret. And yet, on the run from a covert government project that tortured him as a pawn in time-travel experiments, his greatest threat is the relentless pursuit by the sadistic madman in charge, one who not only has an enhanced Sense, but one who can also see glimpses of the future: Brikker. A period piece set in 1962 Iowa, think Stephen King’s The Green Mile meets The Shawshank Redemption and you’ve found an action-packed thrill ride spinning a tragic love story with heartbreak and redemption, terror and torment, and an explosive climax that is unforgettable. And the tagline? “He was born a miracle. It will take one to save the world.”

    Brief

A drifter has a secret kept, and that’s why he doesn’t stop anywhere for too long, trying to keep his secret safe, until he meets Lynn, and ends up getting more involved than he’d like. The secret is that he has the ability to make time go back, which ends up causing side effects and creating different timelines in the story. In the end, after a lot of action, dangerous situations, and having stopped Brikker, Kain decides to “hide” in Canada, far away from his beloved Lynn.

    Accuracy of Book Profile

    It is accurate.

    Draw of Story

The opening scene is quite intense, which already reveals the tone and power of what is to come, inciting the reader’s curiosity.

    Possible Drawbacks

Sometimes the story becomes slightly repetitive, which makes you want to skip some pages of the book to go straight to what matters.

    Use of Special Effects

THE STORY RELIES HEAVILY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

    Primary Hook of Story

The hook is to know the rules of this universe where situations can be avoided by a turn in time caused by some extraordinary people. The hook is also knowing this person and his motives for some of his acts.

    Fanbase Potential

Time travel fans with a more horror feel may be attracted to the narrative, but as the story has many graphic moments, it may not be for all kinds of audiences.

    Awards Potential

Yes, if the narrative focuses more on the central theme of going back in time and changing the timeline events. If it takes a darker path of extreme violence and terror, the central narrative would lose some of its strength.

    Envisioned Budget

    LARGE BUDGET

    Similar Films/TV Series

DARK: BECAUSE OF THESE TIME TRAVELS THAT END UP CHANGING EVENTS ON EACH TIMELINE. PREDESTINATION: AN AGENT TRAVELS THROUGH TIME TO STOP A CRIMINAL FROM KILLING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.

    What’s New About the Story

The darkest part of the story ends up making it more original, but at the same time, it has the chance to move the audience away.

    Lead Characters

The main character is complex, mysterious, and intriguing, has good and bad sides, and has good arc development throughout the plot. Lynn works well in an emotional role and as a sort of sidekick, as she supports Kain throughout his journey.

    Uniqueness of Story

It’s not a rare gem, but it has enough interesting elements for an intriguing, complex, and entertaining plot.

    Analyst Recommendation

    WORK IN PROGRESS

    Justification

The story is interesting, it has an engaging premise and a whole universe that is intriguing, but it lacks a more propitious tone for this type of narrative. We are initially led to believe that it is a kind of science fiction, with a return in time, extraordinary people being persecuted, and an evil scientist trying to make his tests. However, we are taken to a dark, gore, horryfing, torturous narrative. This tone and these more graphic scenes end up taking the weight off the central narrative.

    Tips for Improvement

It would be interesting to find a better balance between the graphic torture scenes with the central theme of going back in time. The tone feels far creepier and horrifying than perhaps this narrative would have called for. Leaving the tone softer would attract a broader range of viewers, sensitive to gore scenes. The story is interesting, it has an engaging premise and a whole universe that is intriguing, but it lacks a more propitious tone for this type of story. We are initially led to believe that we are before a kind of science fiction, with a return in time, extraordinary people being persecuted, and an evil scientist trying to complete his tests. However, we are taken to a dark, gore, horrifying, torturous narrative. This tone and these more graphic scenes end up taking the weight off the central narrative. The main plot is exciting, especially when combined with the character of a drifter who seeks to hide his “special power” from society while trying to stay alive and live a normal life. That’s why the subplots that contain more violent scenes of torture end up sounding kind of excessive. The plot is already interesting enough and should be the center of our attention, but these scenes cause discomfort beyond something positive we could feel when challenged by a read. These scenes end up taking us away from the central purpose of the story by their extreme intensity. It’s definitely not easy to read the details of a torture session, and consequently, it will not be easy to see them on the big screen. Sometimes, the story sounds a bit elongated and repetitive, where characters comment on the same subjects. But a cut of a few pages would already help make the story more concise, with better flow.

    Brief

A man with the rare gift of being able to turn time bonds with a woman and her two children, while being pursued by a violent villain desperate to control him.

    What We Liked

At its core, VELVET RAIN deals in darkness, not unlike Stephen King. It follows multiple POVs, but a single, unique protagonist with the ability to spin time while in pursuit by a villain willing to do anything for the power. The story is layered, especially when it comes to interpersonal relationships. Strong bonds are formed between the characters, which makes it easy to root for them. As a bonus, those relationships balance the darkness in a way that makes the story feel particularly well-rounded.

Film: VELVET RAIN has feature potential, and seemingly franchise potential, too. While there is resolution at the end, it feels minimal enough to keep an audience hooked while not compromising on the satisfaction necessary for a story to be considered successful. There are also complex characters throughout – even with the supporting cast – and interpersonal relationships that humanize the speculative element enough for things to feel well-balanced and plausible overall.

TV: Throughout the manuscript, it’s clear that there is much room for continuation and/or expansion. There are loose ends that could be extended, and storylines that could play out over multiple seasons. Additionally, the story focuses strongly on two opposing characters who have minimal resolution, and interpersonal relationships chock full of drama that could satiate an audience throughout the traditional television format.

    Key points:
    Strong sense of place.
    Complex protagonist.
    Singular villain.
    Strong interpersonal relationships.
    Room for continuation.

    Synopsis

KAIN RICHARDS is in the middle of a fight outside of a bar. He uses his gift, the Turn, to go back in time and prevent it. Somebody sees and the news lands in a local newspaper. In May 1962, Kain and SARAH-JANE stop for a beer at a local bar in Missouri, before returning to her place together. They spend a week together, before Kain decides he can no longer see her. He travels from Missouri to Iowa, and begins looking for a job. He meets AL HEMBRUFF on his way to Wisconsin and is hired as a
field hand alongside five other men, including JIMMY LONG, a local baseball player.

Al’s wife, GEORGIA, begins to question Kain’s scars. He ponders telling the truth, once and for all.
Kain is in a diner when the waitress, LYNN, is confronted by her ex, RAY. Kain steps in, and Ray retreats with a promise to return. Lynn gives Kain a lead on an apartment to rent. He arrives to find that it is her own, and learns that she is Al’s daughter. He begins to bond with Lynn’s daughter, LEE-ANNE, and her son, RYAN, another local baseball player. When a friend, BEN CALDWELL, accidentally hits the family dog with his truck, Kain decides to spin time and reverse the damage. In November 1961, BRIKKER sees the article about Kain turning time outside the bar. He vows to catch up with him. Meanwhile, Lynn and her children sense that something is awry after Kain turns time. Ryan argues with Kain, and demands to know the truth. Lynn apologizes on behalf of her son.

Kain teaches Lee to drive, and they wreck the truck. Both Lee and Al are hurt, but Kain refuses to turn time. In the chaos, Kain reveals that Lee has a crush on Jimmy Long.
Kain and Lynn begin to theorize that Ray is responsible for killing Jimmy’s father, TOMMY, years ago. They are walking through the woods when Kain begins to feel a darkness creep in. He notices COSTELLO, who sets a violent cat on Lynn and Ryan.
They escape, and Kain faces Ryan’s wrath back at the house. Ryan insists that he will never trust Kain, and Lynn becomes periled at her son’s distress.

Brikker kidnaps Sarah-Jane and tortures her, in his quest to find Kain. Meanwhile, Kain and Lynn participate in a three-legged race, while Ray taunts them from the sidelines.
Later, Ryan goes through Kain’s things and finds a photo of Kain from 1934. He uncovers some truth about Kain and attacks him with a baseball bat. Kain wakes up in Lynn’s bedroom two days later, and ultimately reconciles with Ryan. They begin to bond, and he reveals that Ray abused Lee. Kain tries to console him. Later, he tells Lynn the truth. Kain was born in 1920 Newark, New Jersey. He learned about his gift from his grandfather, GRAMPS. He confesses that his gift has been weakening, and warns Lynn that Brikker will never stop looking for him.

Ray gets into a fight with Jimmy Long, and beats him within inches of his life. Kain doesn’t tell Big Al the truth, and Big Al winds up dead. Ray sneaks onto Lynn’s property and kills the family dog before kidnapping Ryan and attacking the rest of the family. Brikker watches from afar as Ray sets the place on fire. Kain finally uses the Turn, and the world begins anew. Ray is again stalking the family dog. Lynn begins to sense that Brikker is nearby. This time, Kain intervenes. He is able to save the family, but must sacrifice his place in it in order to fight Brikker once and for all.
