Logline

The book is an accumulation of 200 plus transcribed original letters and personal diaries, dated 1877 to 1898. It starts out with Sarah and her cousin writing to each other as teenagers. The letters tell how vivacious, carefree, unburdened with no concerns and responsibilities. They are typically teenagers talking about their parties, boys, clothes, books and their weight. You can feel them brimming with energy and their enthusiasm for life. The book follows the wagon train journey that Sarah's family made from North Branch, Kansas to Woodland, idaho. It is like a personal diary of every day life of that time period. From the dust storms of Kansas through the hardships of bad crops, no work and the influence of the Quakers as they moved west. Sarah's father and uncle were United Brethren preachers who traveled the back roads spreading the work of the Lord to the people in Kansas. The letters describe their everyday hardships. It was a hard life, especially for the women of that time, and you will read how very emotional they become. The book includes a map of the wagon train trip in 1895, a summary of letters by dates and a geneology chart of the people in the book. At the end of the book you will find two diaries written by the girls coming over on the wagon train and several short stories and other documents relating to that time.
