Short Summary

An escalating feud between two neighbors, Kevin (a liberal), and Rick (a conservative) before, during, and after the 2016 election leads to a fatal double-shooting. The feud is fed in part by politics, but the feud is exacerbated by misunderstandings about class, economics, politics, and race.

After the shooting their wives realize what the two men always failed to understand, which is that they have more in common than they do different. Ultimately they make a family of their own and depart for the west coast, after their husbands identities are used by politicians on both sides.

Main Character Details

Name: There are four main characters: Kevin (a white American male, and a liberal), Marina (Kevin's wife, a Hispanic mother), Rick (a White American male conservative) and Kate (a conservative and member of her local teacher's union). Kevin and Rick, in the words of the Kirkus Review I just got back, are both deserving of empathy and scorn and cannot see how much they share, aside from political beliefs. Another fundamental part of the story is Marina being Hispanic. In the book she grew up in the Southwest, where being Hispanic wasn't as uncommon. In the midwestern suburbs her identity becomes an issue for the first time, and feeds the growing feud between her husband and her neighbor.
