A young artist begins a series of portraits and starts with the German serial killer, Peter Kurten. As the painting develops he becomes increasingly disturbed, the work growing ever more lifelike as it steadily takes on a frightening persona of its own. The artist and his friend become more and more unsettled by the painting and the strange goings on in the house. The nightmare develops, the artist unable to destroy the one painting he considers his masterpiece, even though the portrait itself seems bent on destruction.
