Brief
In the second installment of this series, the saga continues for the potentially star-crossed lovers as they continue to suffer at the hands of their newly resurrected nemesis.
What We Liked
- Though the interesting perspective of life beyond the veil is missing from this installment, the plot thickens, moves away from the intense focus on the romance angle and creates more tangles for the characters to sort.
- The characters remain well drawn and integrated nicely together within the story.
- Though the vignette style has been abandoned in this offering many subplot lines are added, creating a compelling and expanded narrative.
- A feature adaptation of the story probably remains the most logical vertical for development. The many new characters and additions of exotic locations would dovetail nicely into a film and contribute to the sweeping nature of the story.
- Adapting the book into a television series could be interesting. The characters are more integrated in this book than the first one so dropping the vignettes for television makes sense. There are many plot lines that can now be expanded to fit a television format.
- Two strong female leads; Sequel/franchise potential; Topical storyline; Sinister villain; Wide open and twist ending.
Synopsis
Beginning where the first novel left off, the hijacking of the Steve’s aircraft plays out. Greg Stewart hijacks the plane, but is then shot by Arianne and he falls to his supposed death into the deep ocean along with the stolen money. Arianne is able to land the plane safely with the help of the pilot who sadly loses his life in the process. Arianne saves Steve from his trap inside the plane. They are miraculously saved by a fisherman at sea, nursed back to health and able to return home to their compound on the island of Sonora.
Unbeknownst to Arianne and Steve, Greg Stewart has survived. He plans to vanish from the face of the Earth by changing his appearance through plastic surgery. However, since he owes money to the Colombian cartels, he gets caught up in their leader’s plan to take over the drug trade that passes through Sonora with the help of Jack Naughton, who talks his way into the Sonoran government.
Greg wants to exact revenge on Steve and Arianne so he stalks them and helps get Steve caught up in a bogus cancer treatment trial. Meanwhile, bounty hunter, Robyn Blake, is hired to bring Greg to justice. She follows his trail to South America and ends up back on Sonora when she comes up empty handed. She has fallen in love with the charming Terry Ogilvy while on her assignment and is shocked to discover that he is actually Greg, her intended target. She saves Steve and Arianne from a confrontation with Greg and leaves him for dead at the edge of their property. Arianne feels at peace until she again senses a presence watching her from the trees. Could Greg still be alive?
