Within a five-year time period, I covered over 20,000 miles of road, much of it hitchhiking and alone, including the entire length of Route 66. In the summer of 1972, I survived a stay at the Cecil Hotel in LA's Skid Row which is narrated in the book on pages 43-44.

My first trip at age 17, was to Washington, D.C. to protest the Viet Nam War (March on Washington 1969). My travels continued on to the Atlanta Pop Festival, Mardi Gras, Toronto Pop Festival, California and Montana.

Karen Powell-Riggs grew up in Detroit, Michigan and began to travel at the age of 15. She traveled over 20,000 miles when she was between the ages of 16-21, during the years 1969-1974 (hitchhiking most of the time). Her first experience hitchhiking long distances was not by choice, but after her bus ticket home was stolen at the Second Annual Atlanta Pop Festival (Jimi Hendrix’s last U.S. concert before his death) in 1970. That furtive brush with hitchhiking totaled 753 miles back home. The urge to travel and a lack of money precipitated other trips in the next four years, including the entire length of Route 66 and a stay at the Cecil Hotel in LA's Skid Row. Herein lies her story.
