Logline

When supernaturally ignorable Wendell Coombs is noticed for the first time in years by a reclusive but curious young woman named Esme, he enlists her to help him save his only friend: an ailing houseplant.

Genre

Comedy,Other

Short Summary

Esme comes across Wendell sitting on the edge of the Boston Public Garden bridge and, realizing no one else seems to see him or his three foot ficus, introduces herself. Wendell is too shocked to hold a conversation. As the two go about their days, neither one can forget the other.

In the course of an increasingly absurd (and ultimately futile) attempt to save the ficus, Esme and Wendell emerge from their respective isolations to form a deep friendship.

About The Author

Lauren Coffin writes odd little books with great affection for people. Her work includes literary fiction, magical realism, horror, and a nonzero amount of nonsense. The nonsense might be her favorite.

Accuracy of Book Profile

Indeed the book profile reflects the story although it would be beneficial to add a development pitch as it would help explain the theme of the story and why the narrative is marketable.

Draw of Story

The idea that Wendell's superpower is to be forgettable is compelling especially when someone notices him for some reason. It creates a curiosity about Esme and why she is different compared to the rest of the world to be able to notice Wendell. Then there is interest in both characters as to why Esme can notice Wendell and why no one else can notice Wendell.

Possible Drawbacks

The main conflict is quite simplified and the focus becomes on Wendell's origin story which adds depth, but undermines the stakes and transformations of the characters internal conflicts. Increasing the stakes of their friendship and or the ficus as well as showing a trackable transformation of the internal conflicts would help increase tension and emotional investment.

Use of Special Effects

THE STORY DOES NOT RELY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is that someone notices a superhero whose power is to be forget-able.

Fanbase Potential

Depending on the trajectory of the characters' relationship and further internal transformation this might do well in independent cinema although would likely not be a commercial mainstream blockbuster due to its eccentricity.

Awards Potential

This is unlikely to have awards potential as the drama is low-stakes and the characters' internal conflicts and journey are not as apparent.

Envisioned Budget

LOW BUDGET

What’s New About the Story

The originality stems from the dynamic between the two main characters and by focusing on the progression of their relationship rather than a majority of their dialogue explaining their past, there could be greater tension to their conflict and character development.

Lead Characters

Esme is inquisitive, caring and flashy when she wants. Wendell is consistent, lonely, and helpful plus somewhat glum.

Uniqueness of Story

This is certainly a memorable and quirky concept but the characters and themes could benefit from adjustment to become more apparent in their transformation.

Possible Formats

Film: Indie, Streaming TV Series: Limited Run / Mini-Series

Analyst Recommendation

WORK IN PROGRESS

Justification

While the story has many positive points, it has room for improvement (see possible paths below). If you can't change the story at this point, my suggestion is using your notes as a guide to highlight the best aspects of it when taking the next steps, either putting a pitch page together, a treatment, or a presentation.

Tips for Improvement

Upgrading the pacing on the low-stakes conflict may help create more consistent tension. Allowing the characters to show their transformation of an internal conflict through changing their actions to overcome a flaw would help increase the emotional investment in the characters as they complete their goal.
