Accuracy of Book Profile

There was no book profile for this book.

Draw of Story

The story has a backdrop of the racial inequalities of the South in the 50's but it doesn't take precedence over the story. It starts with 2 young kids becoming friends and growing up despite their color. The story grows into adulthood as their love grows and its it not bogged down by racial tension. It is a sweet love story.

Possible Drawbacks

While it is refreshing to not read an interracial love story filled with racial trauma, it felt too idyllic and unrealistic at times. I was also interested in learning about Ginny getting her PHD in nursing at this time in American history. More exploration of their personal lives would give more depth to the story.

Use of Special Effects

Primary Hook of Story

The hook is that Ginny and Gordon's childhood friendship leads to a deep love that challenges the laws of the time. I would watch this movie for the sweet and wholesome love story that develops in spite of the times they lived in.

Fanbase Potential

This would have a decent fanbase with period, romance lovers. This is a warm and comforting story without too much drama. It has an easy appeal but at times, it feels predictable. It might garner negativity because it doesn't address the significance of an interracial relationship at the time.

Awards Potential

This doesn't have awards potential. The story doesn't have a unique element to it. There have been stories about interracial relationships that have more depth and more drama that would capture the audience. It doesn't deep dive into their psyche and emotions around the relationship either.

Envisioned Budget

What’s New About the Story

The story isn't very original. The first third plays out like The Secret Garden. And the last two thirds is much like any other romance. It is a sweet and timeless story that has many sweet moments. It isn't revolutionizing the romance genre. Ginny and Gordon do not have an obstacle to overcome except telling each other their feelings. If there was an outside forcing stopping them from being together, the ending would be more rewarding.

Lead Characters

The lead characters stand out because they are strong individuals who have been successful personally and come together as two whole people. Ginny has gone to school and gotten her PHD in the 1960's as a Black women. She has a successful career as does Gordon.

Uniqueness of Story

This is not a rare gem. It is an average, predictable love story that will still be entertaining for any audience. It can be improved by having the couple overcome an obstacle such as a disapproving family member or a job opportunity that is in jeopardy because they are an interracial couple. There needs to be more of a fight to get to happily ever after. It feels too easy.

Possible Formats

Film: Studio, Indie, Streaming TV Series: Limited Run / Mini-Series

Analyst Recommendation

Overall, this a solid and entertaining love story that would be a good watch for a large audience. It is almost to sweet and wholesome and could use some additional drama. That drama does not need to be racial based but anything that makes the couples happy ending feel earned.
