Short Summary

Destiny leads Jedidiah Lucas to the superstitions town of Black Water, and is coerced into becoming the town's sin-eater. When twins are born to the mayor one is pronounced dead. But is she? Lies are told and a secret is kept.

The town of Black Water becomes a ghost town with the presumed death of Hattie, the Sin-eater's daughter. The mayor learns that Hattie was actually the daughter he believed was dead at birth. He then learns that Hattie didn't actually die. But he needs to keep that secret from his wife.
