Short Summary

Carolyn has loved music and singing since childhood. Natalie, her grandmother, a former professional Broadway and movie singer, gives her voice and piano lessons. They both are avid fans of The Rising Star talent show. Her single mother hates the show, but Carolyn enters the contest planning to win.

Carolyn has entered the talent contest despite her mother's objections. During the final weeks of the contest her mother was in an auto accident sustaining a traumatic brain injury. Carolyn made a decision to continue the contest even though her mother's post-surgery coma may have sealed her fate.
