Development Pitch

Long ago, in a time shrouded in ancient myth, Freyr walked the earth as a god, adored by all who followed him. Now he is a stranger among humanity, bound like all of his kind by an oath to preserve his family’s anonymity, hiding even his true name. But he cannot live in peace. Because of a horrible mistake he made decades ago — killing the child of the god of chaos, Loki, to save the life of his sister Freyja’s beloved — Loki seeks vengeance against Freyr. When Lia, a human, witnesses one of Loki’s attacks, watches the gods battle high above her on a rainy Los Angeles morning, Loki’s vengeance turns on her. Humans cannot know that the gods still walk among them, and Loki deems Lia's life forfeit. Desperate to save her, Freyr takes this beautiful and unusual woman to his ancient home to bargain for her life. Their journey takes them through Jötunheimr, the land of the giants, where they discover the strange landscape that thrives beneath earth’s surface and the malevolent creatures who have been banished to it. It’s an adventure fraught with danger but along the way, as Lia’s courage and strength awaken feelings Freyr hasn’t known in centuries, he struggles to come to terms with his all-too-human emotions.

About The Author

Rochelle Wilcox was born and raised in Las Vegas, where she learned at an early age the value of fantasy and escape. Raised by a single mom — one of the first women trained to deal poker in the early 70's — Rochelle spent more time in casinos than most adults. She and her husband decided to leave the desert behind and raise their sons in Northern California, where they spend as much time on the water as they can. Despite her lifelong passion for story-telling, Rochelle's path took her to law school and then to a practice focused on media law and appeals. But her love of writing wasn't sated with briefs bound by legal principles and a fealty to facts. And so she started to tell the story that had been playing in her mind for years, based on the Norse mythology she loved as a child and built around her favorite character — the Norse God of Love, Freyr. Books I, II and III are complete and she's editing Book IV, the final book in the Freyr Chronicles.

Accuracy of Book Profile

Yes, it does, even though the conclusion doesn't exactly count as a happy ending.

Draw of Story

The story starts right in the middle of the action and gets you to know more about the characters later, which is a great strategy to get you involved in the narrative quickly.

Possible Drawbacks

The story is very well structured and full of compelling events, so I didn't want to stop reading at all.

Use of Special Effects

THE STORY RELIES HEAVILY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

Primary Hook of Story

The main hook is the existence of Norse gods, virtually forgotten, still living among us.

Fanbase Potential

The characters have the same origins as some Marvel heroes/villains, but with very different personalities and backgrounds. While it may sound confusing to the audience, the story has a chance to generate greater interest in Norse mythology and form a large fanbase.

Awards Potential

It would have good chances in specific Awards aimed at the fantastic cinema.

Similar Films/TV Series

THOR - MARVEL'S SUPERHERO MOVIE SHOWS THE STORY OF THOR, SON OF ODIN, WHO DESCENDS AND CONTINUES HIS ETERNAL FIGHT WITH HIS BROTHER LOKI. AMERICAN GODS - AS IN THE BOOK, THE SERIES TELLS THE STORY OF THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN ANCIENT AND MODERN GODS WHO LIVE AMONG HUMAN BEINGS AND DEPEND ON THEIR WORSHIP.

What’s New About the Story

The story itself is not very original. Other similar narratives, involving gods and humans, have been created before, but the book makes up for it through the charisma of the characters and the action, which is very well written and engaging. To be more original, the book could go a bit out of the ordinary, especially deviating from tropes and creating more unexpected relationships between these characters.

Lead Characters

They are brave, morally upright, and come from very different worlds, which creates an interesting atmosphere for the romance that begins to brew between them.

Uniqueness of Story

It's not a rare gem, but it's a very good book. With a little more originality, it could end up becoming a rare gem.

Analyst Recommendation

CONSIDER

Justification

For starters, the author's writing is very good and engaging. Although many of the things that are going to happen are predictable from the start, she manages to maintain a very rousing pace that makes it difficult to give up reading. Also, the actions themselves are well structured and timed, especially the fight scenes or the ones of battles against mythological monsters. Even characters who are against the protagonists gain some depth and aren't just described as big bad villains. At the heart of this entire narrative, the love story between a god and a human is gradually developed, allowing the reader to engage with this relationship, even though it was quite predictable from the start. Dealing with Norse mythology while there are already well-known film versions of gods like Thor and Loki could be problematic, but the focus on another lesser-known deity, which is Freyr, makes it clear that this is a very different adaptation of that mythology. There is a very interesting background of exploration of this mythological universe, which shows that the author has great interest and knowledge in this area. What's missing is a little more originality and unique characteristics that make this story even more different and allow it to survive in the public's memory. And, as the ending makes clear, if the adaptation is successful, there's plenty of room for other sequels and even a franchise.
