The year is 2034 and the United States is preparing for war. This war will not be fought in some foreign land but here in America. Years of political division and fighting have set the stage for a Second Civil War. When it is over no one will recognize what is left.

Short Summary

The story begins on June 28, 2034, as the main character begins writing a diary that describes how America is heading toward civil war. The city around him is descending into chaos as the fighting begins and he tries to flee to the countryside only to learn no place is safe.

It ends with the main character being killed just a few yards from Canada and freedom. He sacrifices his life to save the woman he loves. The United States falls and is taken over by China, Russia, Mexico and other foreign interests. His diary is found in a used book store.

Development Pitch

The Second Civil War would make an outstanding film. It has all of the key elements, a powerful message, a love story, action and characters the audience can identify with. It is written in diary form which will make it easy to adapt into a screenplay. It includes rich, humorous and thoughtful dialogue. I worked with Gene Siskel during my days in TV news and he taught me the most important things about filmmaking were to create characters people care about and a story that had a powerful message. I think The Second Civil War accomplishes both of those things. Everyone who has read the book says it has gotten them to think about the course America is on. And the fact several people are asking me to write a sequel tells me they want more of this story. The film is also set in Chicago and the Midwest which gives it a unique perspective and flavor. Each location described in the book is an actual town in the United States and filming it would be as simple as following the plotline. The Second Civil War is also unique in that it does not have the usual happy Hollywood ending and is filled with twists and turns as you go along. This is the kind of movie people come out of and talk about all the way home.
