Italian immigrants Vito and Cassandra Gouch come to America in search of the American dream. Part of their dream is realized with the birth of their beautiful daughter Abbi. The family is loved by the small town community of Mendenhall Mississippi because of their humility, kindness, the remarkable produce from Vito's farm and Abbi's extraordinary talent as an artist. Death claims Cassandra and soon after, a cocaine-fueled gang led by big-shot wanna-be Rube Miles brutally attack Vito and Abbi, leaving Vito nearly crippled and Abbi horribly disfigured with cold steel and flames of fire. Father and daughter are separated, each presuming the other dead. Grief and pain take them both to the edge of sanity, but they are finally reunited. Vito is shocked to find that when Abbi experiences joy, her scars are hidden by some sort of aura. The Veil. Those who once loved Abbi are taken aback by this strange phenomenon.
