What We Liked
Earth was uninhabitable so humans moved to a new planet - infested with different species of deadly aliens. Alien Busters are charged with killing them all, but one girl finds that they may not all be hostile and has to convince a government that won't listen. With the help of her two friends and her cute new alien pet, she embarks on a quest to find friendly, smart aliens - and end the bloodshed on both sides.
With lots of cool special effects that have worked so well in so many epic movies about aliens, this would be cool to watch. When it's kids who are the protagonists, it's even more exciting and the settings - another planet infested with aliens - is as fun as it gets. The battles are exciting as are the different species of aliens in this big world. Juxtaposed with personal relationships between the kids while they perform their very adult duties, it's an adventure that will reward viewers and bring people to theaters (or streaming services).
Key points:
Aliens; Kids fighting aliens; A new planet; Stupid, selfish adults who don't get it; Epic battles between humans and aliens.
Synopsis
Nat (Nathalie) is killing aliens on the planet Zelea, where people went after Earth was destroyed. Her friends Kraig and Andie communicate with her and report on alien corpses. They are part of Alien Busters and their mission is to destroy all aliens. The alien corpses they find look like they’ve been fed on by other predator aliens. Nat’s parents did the same job but thought the aliens might have been more advanced than popular opinion, yet they were killed by them. Nat sees a baby alien near its dead mother and is ordered to kill it but she lies. She takes the little purring thing and puts it into her backpack and goes back to the flying cars that will take them to Adkad City. She takes the alien to her home and feeds it cereal, then she watches one of her parents’ videos about their research into saving aliens. Andie comes over to console her about the boss yelling at her. Andie finds the baby alien and tries to kill it until Nat convinces him not to, telling him that her parents believed that there are more to the aliens.
She names the alien Star and dresses it up in a disguise and takes him to buy pet food. Back home, she watches another video where her parents are doing something she can’t really see with a dangerous alien. She cries, and Star seems to sense her pain and consoles her by cuddling. Nat vows to find out what really happened to both of their parents. On her next mission, a colleague named Pam climbs a strange tree and falls to her death after flying aliens come out. They kill another person, and Nat and Andie hide in a strange cave where they discover alien eggs. Andie says they’ll be heroes for their discovery but Nat talks him out of killing the defenseless babies. Back at headquarters, Gale is angry at them again, but they talk their way out of it since Gale was supposed to be reachable and save them. Gale tells them they will be investigated further.
Back home, she bonds with Star then puts him in the garage when Andie and Kraig come over. She convinces them to help her find out what’s really going on with Alien Busters, citing her parents’ theories. They stay over. She gets up in the middle of the night to feed Star in secret. The next day at their interrogation, a professor named Suzanne tells Nat she knew her parents and their theories. Gale knows about the alien eggs, and Kraig is pissed he was kept in the dark by his two best friends. During her interrogation, Nat convinces the panel that she lied about the eggs because she thought the aliens' parents would take revenge on humans and they buy her lie. They get suspended for a week pending the panel’s further investigation. Suzanne calls her into her office and wants to tell her about her research but there are cameras in there. She goes home and gets a message from her father that leads her to one of her mother’s rings that has a storage chip hidden in it. It shows every species of alien on the planet and challenges her to find out the truth about the aliens. She goes to Andie’s and he takes them for a car ride into dangerous territory that Nat wanted to explore. Andie plays fetch with Star and they find the dead body of a farmer with four claw marks on his body - like the dangerous aliens in her mom’s files have. The report of an alien killing a human makes the news.
Kat goes to Suzanne and shows her the chip she found. Suzanne shows her a secret lab where she and Kat’s parents used to experiment on dead aliens. Gale knows about it. Kat lets her have the chip. They go on another exploration of the outer regions of town and find a rock that is cracked and glowing from within. They bring it back and Star bites it open and a red light comes out and Star floats and says his name. They are all stunned. Kraig freaks out and leaves. She takes the rock to Suzanne and they find a hologram with plans for a spaceship. Suzanne says aliens are intellectual and asks to see Star for tests, but Nat refuses.
Nat, Andie and Kraig go back into the desert with the rock that leads them to a cloaked alien spaceship. An alien called an Exo comes from inside and captures them - and knocks them out. They wake up in the desert with no shoes and weird markings on their wrists. Then, some other aliens surround them but a group of humans kill the aliens. Nat meets Kathleen and Burl, who says they are in the Gone Desert, a dangerous place. They go to their outpost, called the community, where there are lots of other humans living. They are shocked to hear the trio encountered an Exo, who are the most intelligent and dangerous species. They are shown a man named Jarrett who encountered an Exo and was tortured and now barely speaks. A doctor finds a piece of metal embedded in their wrists and says he’ll have to research this. The trio wants to leave but the others tell them to stay - the thing in their hand could be dangerous. Jarrett greets Nat then turns and walks away. She follows, and makes him tell her about the Exo - and he says nothing happened to his wrist - but some things happened that can’t be seen. Kraig volunteers to have the doctor, Harris, operate on his wrist - so they all agree to stay long even though Nat is worried about Star. Nat has a feeling her parents were here and asks Burl who can’t find them in his computer. Jarrett and Nat bond over both being orphaned and talk about their parents. Harris says he’ll take out their metal implants in an hour after he can study Kraig’s, which has threads that grew into his blood vessels. Jarrett catches the trio trying to look into the archives, but says he won’t tell on them, then he takes them to his favorite place with trees that move. Nat and Andie get their wrist implants removed then they’re all driven home.
At their follow-up hearings at the Alien Busters offices, Karl and Andie are found innocent but Nat is found guilty - which means they’ll search her house. She freaks out and takes Star and starts walking to the Gone Desert to hide out in the community. She runs into Renee, who’s left her city called Nerva City, where people and some alien species live in harmony. Nat can’t believe it. They finally get picked up by car with Jarrett in it, but he’s not particularly friendly today. At the community, Harris tells her that the metal implant is a tracking device so they can use the humans’ codes to get into the city. They’re probably planning an attack. It’s way beyond human technology. Nat talks to Jarrett, who is offended that she never said goodbye from the last trip - but they mend their friendship when she explains why she had to leave so fast.
