Susannah feels a strange connection to her school’s new student, Duncan. As it would turn out, Duncan and Susannah can read each other’s minds. Unfortunately, just as their relationship is growing closer, Duncan’s ex-girlfriend, Anna, shows up vowing to steal more of Duncan’s power. Duncan tries to protect Susannah and stop Anna from discovering Susannah’s powers by pushing Susannah away. Susannah proves to be more powerful than Anna and outwits her.

It is accurate.

The slow descent into the discovery of her magical abilities and connection to Duncan make the beginning introduction to magic in the high school seem authentic and realistic.

When Anna arrives, the pacing picks up which detracts somewhat from the prior slower character development which can make the character progression feel rushed or non-existent in comparison to the external conflict quick development.

THE STORY RELIES HEAVILY ON SPECIAL EFFECTS

The hook is that just as Susannah is figuring out her power and relationships, an ex-girlfriend of her crush arrives from across the country deadset on taking it all away from her. So Susannah can take risks to try to have it all or stay safe and loose everything she’s gained.

This could have a small to medium fanbase of supernatural YA fans depending on the rules of the magic and chemistry of the characters. This genre tends to be popular with teenagers as it is about their age group.

Supernatural YA genre tends to be sidelined by critics for awards but that doesn’t mean the story couldn’t be commercially successful.

The originality stems from the unique magical world built that separates the characters but also unites them in a common by exceptional cause.

Susannah is reckless, loyal and fierce. Duncan is protective, quick and brave. Caitlin is supportive and adaptive. Anna is vindictive and insecure.

The character development could be more consistent and evenly paced. The plot does tend to center around a high school environment and it is not clear how the setting influences the characters so it may allow for more alterations by separating the story from the confines of high school.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Without clearer inner conflicts, the characters external conflicts have less potential for emotional investment. The pacing of the external conflict regarding the powers is uneven and much faster after Anna is introduced but the character development about their main characters inner conflicts gets slower in pacing.

Matching the inner conflict progression with the development of the external conflict would help even out the pacing. The setting could also be adjust to allow room for the characters to have more depth outside of high school romances as their conflicts and goals.
