Development Pitch
Redlining, rising unemployment, poverty, crack cocaine, gang violence -- the place, Compton, California, the time, the 80s! Lives and futures are literally at stake. All hope seems lost. But there is one Compton resident, Walter Tucker II, who decides to dedicate his life to make a difference. He runs for mayor and wins and begins a journey to save his city. Through his first term in office there is slow change, but Compton residents, seeing things are headed in the right direction, make him the first black mayor ever reelected. By his third term, crime is down and business is up, but suddenly, out of the blue, he is stricken down by cancer. Enter the unexpected hero, his son, Walter Tucker III, a young trial lawyer who has aspirations of leaving Compton and becoming rich and famous in his own right. Upon his father’s death, Walter III is captivated by his father's faithfulness to Compton and embraces his legacy. He runs for his father’s seat and wins. Thrown into the dark world of politics as the youngest mayor in Compton’s history at age 33, Walter is enticed by John Macardican, a so-called friend of Walter’s father, to accept bribes to vote for his waste-to-energy plant. After being elected to Congress and then charged by the federal government with receiving bribes when he was mayor, Walter defends the charges against him, but loses his case. His conviction leads him to a deeper insight about his life, his choices and their consequences, and a surprising new path.
