The story has a two tiered structure. The bigger story is about the Timor campaign involving Australian commandos in WW2. The more personal story deals with how three different characters undergo positive psychological change dealing with the Timorese people and their invading enemy, Japan.

The story begins with Jack Hannan showing his toughness and vulnerability in a two-up ring and boxing match and Doc Woodley demonstrating his remarkable abilities as a sniper while shooting kangaroos. He battles to controls his nerves brought on by a damaged relationship with his father.

Jack Hannan surrenders to his fate on his death bed and shows his deep and abiding friendship with Andy Barry, his comrade in Timor. Doc Wheatley forgives his father and comes to terms with his troubled past.The Timor experience has given them a new perspective in dealing with their inner conflicts
